Meet internationally renowned poet and writer, Dr William Radice: the world's leading translator of Tagore, when he visits Bradford to lead discussions on the significance of the Tagore canon, and the relationship between poetry and prose.
Kala Sangam is delighted to host this unique event, which will also feature a variety of live Indian dance performances, including:
- A welcome dance by Kala Sangam Dance Academy students, Abi and Meena Deivanayagam
- A Bengali dance by Shuma Pal
- An interprative dance by Dr Geetha Upadhyaya (Kala Sangam's CEO and Artistic Director) which takes a passage from Dr Radice's new book, Gitanjali, and illustrates it through the joyful movements of bharatanatyam (a style of classical Indian dance).
For Tagore, the realism of prose and the passion of poetry were equally necessary, and his life and works offer lessons to us all about how to balance the two. Dr William Radice, described by Kaiser Haq as "unquestionably the finest translator of Tagore into English to date”, will discuss Tagore's work with examples from his own translations, including his new translation for Penguin India of Tagore's most famous book, Gitanjali (1912).
There will be an opportunity for Q&As after the main discussions.
What does Gitanjali mean?
In Bengali (the main language of Bangladesh and West Bengal):
Gita (or Geeta) means 'song'
Jali is a celestial offering
So Gitanjali (the name of the book by Tagore and translated by Radice) is "an offering through song".
About William Radice:
Radice is known for his translations of the poems and stories of Tagore for Penguin, as well as for his own poems. He was a lecturer in Bengali at SOAS, University of London from 1988 to 2011. His many books include Myths and Legends of India and Teach Yourself Bengali, and in recent years he has written opera libretti.

Learn Indian dance and languages at Kala Sangam
Abi and Meena have learned to dance under the guidance of Dr Geetha Upadhyaya, a classically trained dancer and highly experienced teacher in bharatanatyam (classical Indian dance).
Kala Sangam runs weekly dance and language classes on Saturday morning. All abilities welcome. Free taster class available. Next season’s classes start on January 7th – call 01274 303340 or email academy@kalasangam.org to sign up or to find out more about learning Indian dancing.
